Thank you to all of you that attended Curriculum Night this past Thursday Night. We hope you found it beneficial. If you were unable to attend, please ask your homeroom teacher for the handouts from the night. Mark your calendars for next Thursday, September 25 for our Initial Meeting for our Charleston Trip! We will meet at 6 pm in the media center. We look forward to seeing you there. Progress Reports will be coming home this Thursday in Thursday folders. Please remember, student work can be found in your child's notebooks, rather than coming home in Thursday folders. Please check PowerSchool Parent Portal regularly to stay informed about your child's grades. If you do not have an account, please contact Mrs. Nicki Jones in the front office. Her email is [email protected], or you can reach her at 980-343-1063.
Math with Ms. Barclay: Tomorrow students will take their first math MAP test of the school year. Thursday, students will take their first major math assessment. The test will assess their understanding of the place value system and their ability to perform addition and subtraction with multi-digit whole numbers when solving a word problem. Students will be given a study guide tomorrow to start working on, and then Tuesday and Wednesday we will work through it to ensure they are prepared for Thursday’s test. I always recommend once they have the correct answers a good way to study is to redo the problems with the answers hidden. Or another effective way to prepare is just switch the numbers in the problem and rework the problems. There are still about 20 math workbooks that need the pages ripped and hole-punched if anyone can help out with the task. These can be sent home with your child tomorrow, and if you could return them by Thursday of this week, it would be so helpful, or you are welcome to come in and do it here at school in one of our tutor rooms. I really appreciate the parents that have already stepped up to complete the other workbooks. Looking past the first unit, next week we will continue building on students’ understanding of the place value system and solving word problems involving multiplication and division with multi-digit whole numbers.
Science with Ms. Beatty: In science this week, students began their unit on ecosystems. They were introduced to what an ecosystem is, biotic and abiotic factors within an ecosystem and the world's major terrestrial biomes. Students were also introduced to the idea of a "Testing Shirt" which canbe made at home and worn on Post test day to help them with their test. Next week, we will finish our study on biomes with the major aquatic ones and learn about food chains and food webs. If your child misses a day of school, please know that everything we do in class is added to the 5th grade Weebly under the "Science-->Ecosystems" tab. Please keep saving those 2-liter bottles!
Lab with Mrs. Groller & Mrs. Bellar: This week in the learning lab, the students started word work. Every day the students were introduced to different activities on the word work menu and given class time to complete them. Every two weeks the students will receive new words and are expected to give the first 20 minutes of lab time to complete their word study activities. Students will be graded every two weeks on their activities. This grade will be entered as both a reading and writing grade. I am very proud of the hard work and dedication every 5th grade student has shown.
Have a great week!
